Meet the “C” of our A-Z Breed Series: The Cane Corso!
The Cane Corso is a breed that commands attention, and for good reason! With their powerful build, imposing presence, and loyal nature, these Italian dogs make incredible companions when properly trained. Whether you’re considering bringing a Cane Corso into your life, or already share your home with one, here’s what you need to know to ensure you have a happy, healthy relationship.

Origins and Characteristics
The Cane Corso, pronounced “KAH-nay KOR-so,” is thought to be a descendant of the ancient Roman Molossus. Historically, they were used for hunting large game and as guard dogs—roles that shaped their robust physique and formidable demeanour. Today, they are still known for their protective instincts and muscular build.
These dogs typically weigh between 90 and 120 pounds and stand about 24 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder. Their short, dense coat comes in various colors, including black, grey, fawn, and brindle. Despite their intimidating appearance, Cane Corsos are known for their affectionate and loyal nature towards their families.

Exercise and Mental Stimulation
Cane Corsos are an active breed that require regular exercise to keep them healthy and content. Aim for at least one to two hours of physical activity each day to meet their energy needs. You will also need to make sure this smart breed uses their brain! Structured training is a must-have for a powerful breed like this.

Living with a Cane Corso
Cane Corsos are best suited for experienced dog owners who understand their needs and are prepared to invest time in their training and socialization. They are protective and can be reserved with strangers, making them excellent watchdogs, but also potentially challenging in social situations if not properly trained.
They typically get along well with children and can be very affectionate with their families. However, due to their size and strength, it’s important to supervise interactions with younger kids, and to ensure that your Cane Corso understands appropriate behaviour.
The Cane Corso is a breed that offers unwavering loyalty and protection to those who earn their trust. With the right approach to training, socialization, and care, a Cane Corso can be a wonderful addition to your family! At Bark Busters, we’re here to support you in building a strong, positive relationship with your dog.
