If the weather outside is frightful, you can still have fun with your pet. All dogs need physical and mental stimulation on a daily basis, so don’t let bad weather stop you from interacting with your pet. Here are some indoor games you can play with your dog to keep him stimulated and happy.
Come, sit, stay
Why not take the opportunity to practice basic skills with your pet? Break out a few treats and give the command for ‘come, sit, or stay’, then mix it up and try a different command. It never hurts to brush up on basic skills, and it can break the monotony when you’re stuck indoors.
This is a fun game that can be played indoors or outdoors. Take your pet into a different room, then hide a treat in the original room. Call your dog in and see how long it takes him to find the treat. To make it easier on your pet, set up two or three buckets, placing the treat under one. See how long it takes your dog to find the correct bucket and remember to shower him with praise when he finds the correct one.
Where’s the toy?
Take one of your dog’s favourite toys and place it in the middle of the room. Ask your dog to find the toy, then get excited and give plenty of praise when he does. Next, hide the toy out of sight, but nowhere that’s too hard to find. Keep moving the toy and keep the excitement up by praising your dog profusely each time the toy is found.
Take your dog’s favourite toy and toss it up to the top of the stairs, making your dog wait until you give the command to retrieve it. Once your dog reaches the top of the stairs, give the COME command and take the toy again. Repeat this until your dog gets too tired to play.
Hide and seek
Place your dog in one room, then hide in another. See how long it takes for your pooch to find you!
